Investor Approaches to Generative AI
Given the rapid evolution of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), PRI staff invite signatories to share resources and perspectives to strengthen awareness of the risks and opportunities it presents. GenAI has achieved broad adoption by tech companies and the broader public as of late, while prompting dire warnings from some in the field.
The release of Chat GPT in fall 2022 sparked a great deal of interest and buzz in relation to generative AI, a form of artificial intelligence that, when trained on broad datasets, can produce new text, images, audio, video, or code by predicting the next word or pixel. Since the fall, public awareness of the powers and pace of change exhibited by the technology has broadened significantly.
In light of the rapid evolution of generative AI in recent months and its widespread adoption by technology companies and the broader public, PRI staff invite signatories to engage in discussion on generative AI. Through productive discussion and information-sharing in this online forum, this collaboration will help build collective awareness of the risks and opportunities associated with generative AI among investors.
We ask you to consider the following guiding questions:
What key risks and opportunities associated with generative AI has your organization identified?
How is your organization considering the potential positive and negative impacts of generative AI on environmental, social, and governance issues?
How are these risks and opportunities informing your investment decision-making, stewardship activities, and/or policy advocacy?
We greatly appreciate your perspectives. Please feel free to post your responses to these questions, resources that have helped shape your thinking on generative AI as an investor, and other relevant materials to this collaboration.
Through productive online exchange and information-sharing in this forum, this collaboration will help build collective awareness of the risks and opportunities associated with generative AI among investors.
